What's the smallest tire that will fit on a 20.8 x 38 rim?

<p>The Firestone book, shows that tire size has an 18" wide rim, and the 18.4x38 uses a 16" rim. The 15.5 x38 - 14". Diameter goes smaller with each. I am thinking the 18.4 would be just fine. There is 16.9 also, and the chart did not show it.  Smaller than that, I doubt it.</p>

Is the question - "What is the narrowest tire that will fit on the rim a 20.8 came off of?"

If so, that would likely be an 18" wide rim. Would be really hard to seat an 18.4 on it even...

I got a 4440 and 4640 with 20.8 x 38 tires that I would have liked to put 380s on.  Guess I will have to change rims also. That's gonna break the piggy bank for sure.

If you're looking at 380's on a 44/4640, I'm not sure you'd really be impresssed with 380-38's. Short, and not much load capacity, especially if you want to lift a planter with them.

Suggest you look at 380-46's.

Buy a 46" rim shell, then have someone with a plasma table cut the step-down rings out of ~ 1/2" plate with a hole pattern to bolt right onto your castings.

I did the same with a set of 340-46's that mount on 34" castings...

Sure, it was a few sheckles, but far less than buying a new set of tires with a tractor thrown into the deal!!

I was thinking along the same lines as Luke. I was thinking about conversion rims to get to 46" also, OR Unverferth stub-disc wheels/rims to get to 46".

A taller tire, but narrow, should help get a little more tire/tread onto the ground. Plus it should help keep the tractor "more level". I will still have to measure, for clearance, from axle to cab fenders, to insure you still have clearance with the "possible" 380/90R46 tire.

the 8100 i used to have had 18.4 's on 20.8 rims and 14.9 front tires where 16.9's were. worked perfect.

Yes, but Clay was contemplating a 380mm (14.9") tire onto an 18" rim.

He might have done it, but would have taken 4 buckets of Murphys and 6 Bead Cheetah's all syncronized perfectly to get the bead to seat.

I have the large castings for centers. Can I bolt rims to that or do I also need to replace the hub?

Here's some links:

http://www.umequip.com/wheels/step-up-conversion/?tab=features

Click on blue highlighted titles. (for Unverferth)

Wold rims, have double bevel rims and single bevel rims that are called "conversion rims". I just installed some from 36" to 38" from Wold. {Went from 13.9 x 36" tire to 15.5 x 38" tire}

http://www.woldinc.com/tractor-replacement.html

On the 3010 tractor rims, it is kinda hard to see, but there is an additional bump/rib inside there, where the clamps go.

Hey, that's slick. Didn't know such a thing existed. I'm gonna have to look around locally and see what I can find. Shipping will probably kill me otherwise.

I have a 4020 with 34" cast centers and 18.4x38's on it. the rims are mounted to the cast hub with taller wedges. I don't know if these wedges are still available (tractor has been like that as long as I can remember). Patrick

Here are the rim's you are looking for . . . .
he also has tires to fit (new and used)
Rim's - http://stcloud.craigslist.org/grd/3459076371.html   Nope, I screwed up . . . Here are 38 to 42 step ups ~
http://stcloud.craigslist.org/grd/3413539422.html
He likely has 38 to 46 step ups or has access to them . . .
tires - http://stcloud.craigslist.org/grd/3456732513.html
Examples - they are out there, not sure how far away you are, but that's kind'da the average going rates . . .

iseedit:

Those rims happened to be 42" up to 46" , in the ad. Poster would probably have to buy step-up clamps, also to make them work, on his cast hubs(38")

Note: Maybe you noticed it, or maybe you didn't, just thought I would mention it.

Yes, I corrected my post .. . . I proofed it and then noticed.
There is another ad with 38 to 42 step ups also
But, they are out there and likely that guy has them or knows where to get them.
Up toward Fargo (RRV  - beets ), step ups from 38's to 46's would be common

Clay, I'd feel very comfortable putting a 18.4-38 on an 18" rim. For tractor pulling in the farm classes, quite a few guys will make 20-21" wide rims for 20.8 tires. The brand of tire makes a HUGE difference on how the tire looks and performs.
I have a set of 20.8 old style F&R Stones that look awesome on 22" wide rims. The wider rims really pulled the bars out nice. Had a set of BFG radials on 20" rims, and it never changed the width a bit.

MIchelin is a little more 'forgiving' on rim sizes than most, might check their site.

Dallas Center IA 515-720-2463
Note: I am not promoting Abilene or any other company. Just have their catalog handy.

New rear rim - 12" by 46" open center, double bevel, drops to fit 38" cast

Part number R12X46-38-DB
Not cheap at $825- each

This would take a 14.9x46 tire or 380x46

Fits the wheel type using the cast blocks as the 4630 heavy offset cast in the pic.
Edit: After looking I see the dual casting is Offset Cast, not Heavy Offset Cast.
Heavy Offset Casting on the inside wheel.
All take the same Blocks or Wedges as your Straight castings.

Pretty sure this drop style rim is in the links above in the post by 4WD

Lower picture is from the Unverferth website. It is single bevel, but shows how it is done.

It is 2 AM, Does not look like we have near the snow that we are suppose to get. But temp was 35 not too long ago. Now down to 32.
There is snow blowing. And I have not see head lights on the highway since sundown.

TV says there are power outages just five miles south of me between Waukee and Adel.
My lights were off for a about 20 seconds a few minutes ago. Flickered several time.
Wonder what it will look like at sun up?

could just take tires off the old rims, and set up jig to hold torch and turn the rim and cut out a section and weld the bead back on

tractor pulling guys do that all the time
