Subject: getting upper sprocket off caseih 2208 corn head

I'm replacing chains and sprockets on the head and the upper sprocket doesn't want to come off very easily on all of them (some do though). A pickle fork seems to gouge the dust cover under the sprocket and I can't get a puller in place without removing the dividers. Is the correct proceedure to remove the dividers and use a puller or is there a special tool that makes it easier? thanks
