Waterloo, IL | I had my John Deere 4850 tractor inspected at the local John Deere dealership and when they jacked up the rear end, they found play in one of the axles. When they drained the oil, they found metal shavings in there as well. My question is, is this something that could be done without the experts, or should I let them just do it. I would like to learn about how it is done, but don't want to screw anything else up. I have the big service manual and it tells you how to take off the axle and planetary drive. The dealership quoted me anywhere from 5000-8500 depending if the bearing spun on the axle and wore it down. Can I really save much money by doing some myself and then having them put everything back together? Has anyone ever changed one of these before on a similar john deere tractor? I included two pictures from jdparts to help show what I am talking about.
