West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edge | High ground has between 6 to 12" of grey wooded top soil, mostly 8 to 10". The low ground is measured in feet, the deepest I've found is 11 feet. I'm in the process of rectifying that oversight on mother natures part, her putting all the soil where it is of no use to us. All on top of impermeable clay, ranging from blue to grey not sure how deep, but its a lot. Except one spot where I found bedrock down about 8 feet.
In the black sea region in Southern Russia, I watched them landscaping a feild for development. They peeled about 4 feet of the most beautiful black topsoil I've ever seen. It is now a bunch of big box stores, last I saw, the soil was still in a giant pile.
