The best drive IMO is to start about Hot Springs AR (Natural spas and a state park) then proceed WNW through Mena AR and Wilburton OK (Robbers Cave State Park) then the 'Northwest Passage' at Ft Supply OK then though the Glass Mts in route to Guymon OK...then you can drop down to Amarillo TX. The Ouachita Mts IMO (Hot Springs area) are more representative of Eastern Hardwood forest than those of NE OK which tends to have a heavy eastern crosstimbers influence. Do stop off at Stillwater OK and eat at Eskimo Joes...it's kind of a big cultural thing here. Woodward OK has a dynamite BBQ place also. Eufaula Lake north of Wilburton OK is the juncture of the Deep Fork, North Canadian, and South Canadian rivers and along with Ft Smith and the lower Arkansass River a geographic area important during the days of Outlaws and Hanging Judges. http://www.arkansas.com/places-to-go/parks/national-federal-parks/f...

Keystone Lk between Tulsa and Stillwater is the jucture of the Upper Arkansas and Cimmaron Rivers...another important area in state history. In the central portions of the state have someone show you a Blackjack Oak tree....early settlers called groves of these trees the 'Iron Forest' because the tough wood was a hindrance to wagon travel and settlement. Settlers also talked about week long + wagon rides across wildfire burn areas....modernization has seen a reduction in fire use/accetance as an important ecosystem management tool....unfortunate and largely responsible for current land degradation.

Then we had the Land Run and the Oil Boom:

That deviates from 'ol 66', but if your gonna migrate north the least I can do is lead you though diverse country and some area history. You will pass through Tribal or 'Nation' Lands here as well....another important part of OK state history....ie the Trail of Tears. http://www.nps.gov/trte/index.htm
