<p>Yes, soft water (rain water) makes a huge difference to the life span of the water heater. Mine is about 37 years old, all rain water through it and no maintenance yet other than draining off the sediment once in a while. Although changing the anode rod also makes a big difference to some, I have never done it. Figure its not worth bothering with now after all these years. In the local village a water heater might last 5 to 7 years but I know a guy who has over 25 years on his and he changes the anode rod in the heater regularly. Never heard of it causing the water to smell any different.<br />EDIT: my mistake, I went and checked the date on the water heater and it is 1967 so a little older than I thought.</p>
