Subject: RE: Farming in Africa

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Star_Safari

Dark Star Safari (2002) is a written account of a trip taken by author Paul Theroux 'Overland from Cairo to Cape Town' via trains, planes, buses, cars, and armed convoy.[1] Theroux had lived in Africa as a young and idealistic early member of the Peace Corps and part of the reason for this trip was to assess the impact on Africa of the many years of "helping" from Western countries. His assessment is generally critical of the long term impact of aid programs.

I found it discouraged the thought any external influences such as farming operations could succeed. The picture Theroux paints is one of all structure neglected or being actively destroyed, whether business, governments (except those that activily exploit the population for the benefit of the head of of government), roads, or buildings themselves. I perceive that the backlash against coloniasm is still happening and that would work very much against modern farmers from other parts of the world today at least as much as it has in the past few decades.
