When I transferred to Roswell (Walker AFB) NM I was in the squadron of B-52's that were supposed to go to Salina, Kansas. Instead Shilling closed and their KC 135 crews and planed went to Roswell.
My wife and I subscribed to the Salina paper, until the changes came to be known.
Walker was an almost ideal SAC base. A comfortably large town, and you could crash off ether end of the runway and not hit a civilian. We go back to Roswell every few years to see old friends.
The Air Force does not have the Fire Power we were sitting on from all of my 25 years. Probably not as interesting work than compared to what we see in the smaller and more versatile force. | |
