| There's lots of different philosophies people can use with success when breeding dairy cattle so I certainly don't begrudge anybody that does it differently than I do....
Our RHA is over 25,000, annual butterfat is more around 4.2%, 3.2% protein but it keeps going up as the makeup of my herd becomes more crossbred. We are still around half Holstein as we took a one foot in the pool approach to the crossbreeding experiment and have only in the past year and a half gone to breeding for all crossbreds. I imagine when we are almost all crossbred our BF will be closer to 5% and hopefully protein can tick up to the 3.5-3.6 range. Lately I've seen more tankerloads in that 4.3-4.4% butterfat range so we are making some progress. Last DHIA test had us at 4.6% and 3.3% but that tends to be inflated compare to what we actually ship to the plant. | |
