Depending on what engines you are talking about the hp/torque curve charts may be available online or from your dealer.

What these tell you is where (at what rpm) the engines 'make' their power. For example a gasser may produce 400 hp at 5000 rpm and little torque rise at lower rpm (meaning less hp as rpm goes down), where a 3406 Cat may produce 400 hp at 2100 and because of torque rise still produce that amount down to 1500 rpm. Each has the same hp but the gasser will have to downshift on a hill but the Cat will make the pull. Clear as mud???????
