When I think of backgrounding, i think of growing/feeding calves in a lot to a weight around 7-800 lbs and then shipping them out. If you can get the cattle that far, why not feed them out? The hardest part is done. I may be all wet, but I think the money is in feeding them out to fat. Every time cattle are shipped/stressed, they lose some money in shrink and possibly going off feed and possible sickness. Somebody eats that loss.

Maybe you're just wanting to graze them primarily. That would be different.

I do know some cattle feeders who link up with backgrounders. They could ship in loads of lightweight southern calves to your area and you could get them off and going up to about 7-800 lbs. You wouldn't have to own the cattle. But, in the end, I still think the feeder makes more money than a backgrounder.
