N FLA | Chicken guys here don't have anything left after they pay for propane and a little labor.
I suggest you ook at the youtube videos of Gabe Brown. I would think in your area you could graze brassica, sorghum, and peas after wheat, plant some oats after the first harvested soybeans, and plant some ryegrass after corn to graze in spring before planting some late beans. Virtually year round grazing. I know this is simplistic but could put a couple hundred pounds on the calves, and probably not even have to buy them. Just pay dad an agreed price, weight and after you put a couple hundred pounds on them and sell them.Buy a small notill drill, livestock trailer, and electric fence and jump in.
If you try it on 40 head you are only out seed/fertilizer/time/fuel. Equipment can be resold. And chances of them gaining weight are pretty good if you have a good forage.
I'm not doing it myself, but I think it would work. | |
