Agreed, look at both newer and used homes, to compare. A lot of people will think to check out how old the roof is, electrical, and age of appliances, but forget about things that are considered a "given" part of the home. Consider the other updates an older house will need, like: central air, windows, chimmey cleaning / repair, new pipes / well drilling... For the money you spend in updates on an older house, you could be putting more down on a newer home (albeit, a little higher priced), and save in the long run.
