The coulters on my planter don't run quite as deep as the openers. Their only job is to slice through the trash so the openers can do their job of opening a seed slot instead of pushing trash.

IMO, the only reason to use any form of tillage is to correct a subsoil problem such as hardpan. However, what works for me in my sandy soils won't necessarily apply to you.
