Subject: What am I missing ? about soil

Okay Ill be the first to say I have limited knowledge of Hydroponic farming but I dont understand why the concepts dont apply in many ways to traditional farming. Soo much talk about soil building OM micro nutrients PH and a thousand variabiles we may never understand, and yet hydroponic systems use an inert growing medium for root support and then supply the right nutrients and fertilizers at the proper time to grow the plant. Are we spending too much of our resources building the fertility of whole fields when we would be better off to find ways to just to supply the corn plant with the feed it needs instead. I guesss strip tilling somewhat follows the same idea but wonder if the use of more side dressinng at different crop development stages wouldnt be better than dumping all on the field at one time. Any thoughts
