Definately check the exhaust pipe going into the DPF. We had one here that had cracked and melted some of the plastic shielding below it as well as damaged the temp sensor harness. The new pipe was difficult to get lined back up properly. I haven't heard of any issues with the filter itsself, but I can see that if it wasn't assembled properly, that there could be a smoke issue.
