Subject: Log splitter problem

SW Indiana
I just worked on a log splitter for a friend of mine. New hoses, tuned up motor, new pressure gauge etc. At full extend on cyl, gauge hits 2500 psi, but when he puts a log in it will only hit 1000 psi. I'm kind of at a loss.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Edit. Just found out from him that splitter had been under water in a flood. Wonder if there could be some corrosion on barrel letting it bypass internally?
