Most non flex varieties will show differences in total fertility (including available moisture or too much moisture) by tip back on the ears while planting at a fixed high population. Though I had a variety one year that didn't like 34K population next to two others in the same 4 acre patch it tipped back about half the ear while the others tipped back 4 or 5 kernels. None were fed excess nitrogen, that was the year the whole field averaged 173.2 bushels dry on 110 pounds of N.
