Driftless SW Wisconsin

Wow, Rusty. That is a surprise, but that is part of what you need. That looks like our model 1500 add-on coulter, meant to fit over our stanard screw adjust Trashwheels.  I can't tell from the photo angle but it could also be our 1572 combo that just needs a Trashwheels stem assembly.  Is there a screw adjust knob on top and a 2x2" square tube to accept a Trashwheels stem assembly?  Probably not.

In any case, all you need is one 1130A-12.75 Stem assembly (if you have the screw adjustment behind the coulter) or add an 1140-1 screw adjust mount (if no screw adjustment and just a U-shaped back plate which is bolted to the row unit.

You got a pretty good stand in that vetch. You even have the ripple blade which I recommend for vetch type conditions.  Adding our 12.75" diameter, swept-back tooth Trashwheels and you will really see more uniform depth control and emergence.

Clearing a path will also warm the seed path and possibly help reduce the purple appearance of the corn plants for reasons as suggested by other posters above. Purple be partially due to cool soils early in the immediate area of the young plant.  All that vetch between the rows will certainly help hold moisture between the rows for later as well as help keep mid-season between row temps moderate and maybe help with weed control also.

I'm glad to see you have at least part of the 1572.  Kinze planters like that add-on coulter in those tough conditions because of the way our Timken bearing hub is simply supported and a few inches forward of the vee openers for more clearance behind the blade.

In your 2nd picture of the original post, the row to the left of the center shows some quite uneven plant height, probably resulting from nonuniform emergence probably resulting from uneven seed depth due to the Kinze planter row unit's gage wheels going up and down over all that vetch.  Adding row cleaners to your existing Dawn coulters (to create a 2-piece version of our 1572 Trashwheels/coulter combo) should dramatically improve plant uniformity.

Do you have the Kinze HD down pressure springs on the row units (4 springs per row, adjustable along the top link)?

Thanks for the picture. Seeing how that ripple blade is cutting through that vetch is impressive. That is why we designed and manufacture this setup as it is.  It will be even more impressive if you add row cleaners. although the way the vetch root system grows, you will not have a perfectly cleared black tilled strip behind the planter. but you will have more uniformity and a bit of black soil right over the seed.

Dr. Dwayne Beck at SD State Univ does not like a very wide cleared strip no tilling into these conditions. Just a couple inches black and uniform seed depth. Two Curvetine closing wheels per row will also help with more uniform emergence and plant height by providing uniform seed to soil contact (needed in addition to uniform seed depth) for uniform emergence and plant height (and later in the season, more uniform pollination).
