Murfreesboro, Tennessee | This is a question we ask ourself every year. Not sure we are right, but this is what we do.
On our wet farms, we spray a fall burndown. Keeps weeds from coming up and allows the soil to dry out quicker and warm up faster for planting in the spring. These wet farms are usually very flat and there is no soil erosion to speak of.
On our more rolling ground, where erosion can be of a problem, we try to use a cover crop, especially following cotton (not much ground cover following cotton as it is with corn). We use annual ryegrass and love the way the root system really does a better job of breaking compaction that our inline ripper.
I think TN was one of the first in the nation to have RR resistant Marestail. We have found that a good covercrop will really help out with the troublesome weeds like marestail and pig weed.
Good luck. | |
