In 1935 more than 1,000,000 gallons of soy oil were used in enamel paints for Ford cars. Another 540,000 gallons were made into glycerine and used in shock absorbers, and 200,000 gallons were used in the foundry as a sand binder in the manufacture of cores. It took 78,000 acres of soybeans to yield all this oil; 12,000 of these acres were grown by Ford.
