Always carry a pocketknife. Whatever the salesman drops off is fine for me as I seem to go trhough a couple a year, although I don't like the half-serrated blades. They are no good for cutting baler twine! I tried a folding boxcutter style for a short while. The replaceable blades were nice, but you just can't pry with those, or use them as a flat screwdriver. My dad also taught me to carry a roll of electrical tape when working. I've fixed a lot of things you'd never even dream would hold with e-tape!

For firefighting, I always carry a Victorinox Rescue Tool my wife gave me when our daughter was born. It is a weapon.
