I have one on a 630 Deere Flex. When I do wheat, I just disconnect the driveshaft and it works fine. I know on some header models this is not possible, so it then is your call. You could adjust the air baffle to cut the air down. I have three heads for cutting wheat, one with the air reel and two others with bat reels. Bat reels aren't bad, but when things get lodged or tangled I'd take a finger reel anyday.
