western iowa,by Denison | we use a 5/8 square head bolt and nut-make 1/2 thick washers out of 1/2x2 steel-the nice thing about the galvanizied bolts is the threads go 2/3rds the way up the bolt so if your bolt is to long you just keep tighten-the bolts cost a $1.45 with the nut-and really easy to work with with gloves on.Got them at my local electric company, like to bolt over just nails,we will nail everything then I come back and add bolts and angle iron bracing-on this building will have over $2000 just in bolts and bracing, but a lot happier with the strength-it would take 24 30d ring shanks to hold the same on sheer and pull as one bolt-and the large washer is important to give it more surface tension-when I looked at some old barns-the ones that had bolts through all there joints had about a zero failure-does get tiring drilling and bolten things together? 2 washers-1 bolt and 1 nut -drill attach-tighten ,next one and so it goes-about 5-600 bolts and if I hustle I can get about 30 per hour installed! | |
