We have the unique opportunity to run on winter ranges that provide all the salt, minerals cattle need. We have even tried to feed lick tubs, Loomix, etc. and cattle might eat a little of it, but never enough to warrant putting it out for them on an extended time frame. I love to make bets with feed salesmen, they say my cattle will eat thier lick, and minerals without a doubt! I tell them your on, we put it out and they won't touch the stuff. They can't believe it.
Guessing that is alkali ground? We rent pasture in part of the valley that is real bad alkali, only reason it is still in pasture. Cows hardly touch mineral there, always look/do fine. Never worried too much about it since they eat plenty of it when we put them on grass stubble or pasture back home. Something else I've noticed, if I feed rice straw or cornstalks that are grown down in the Sacramento area (lot of Selenium there) mineral consumption drops way off. |
