Generally the only ones claiming one is better are selling that product and at a typically higher price. Most dry fertilizers are ortho, most liquids in the US are a blend of ortho and poly. The hydrolysis of poly to ortho takes approximately one week after application, therefore little difference in perfomance would be expected.
