Buster50: Since I think you have an AC welder already what you need to do is practice with what you got. Start out with just putting down beads on a piece of somewhat clean metal. Get to where you're looking at the puddle as you're welding. With AC stay with 6011 or 6013. Use both hands on the stinger. Keep your elbows in tight to your sides. With 6013 don't wiggle the rod as the arc can't burn off the flux and it get included into the weld (iseedit knows what he talking about) After awhile (maybe 40 rods) you'll get to where you're just doing what it takes to make and maintain a good puddle.

After you're comfortable with just laying beads on scrap metal. Try butt welding two pieces together. With 6011 you can do a weave pattern to make the bead wider. Maybe a 1/2" wide bead now. Keep practicing that until you can burn a whole rod where the bead is the same height and width without valleys or unevenness. I think if you go thru 20# of rod practicing you'll be amazed at how much better you'll get.
