Subject: Re: Welding ????

NW Central Ohio
...I learned all my welding by myself with a 50 year old 180 amp Lincoln AC welder. I still have it...and when I have something I need penetration on ...it gets the nod. I've used all kinds of rod with it...but most of them fall into 2 categories....a 6013 type...or a 6011 type. I now use 7014 rod with it for mild steel welding. Makes a pretty bead, and penetrates reasonably well. I will still use a 6011 type when welding some things that are out of position. You just can't beat that quick cooling puddle and little slag. I also own a 180 amp Hobart wire feed. I use it only when my welding will be very clean. Using 75-25 gas...I don't feel safe saying it penetrates much, but it does fill grooves well, and it's nice for sheet metal. Using your welder often is the trick to learning how to do it right. Practice might be expensive....but definitely worth it.
