First you need to understand Von Liebig's barrel stave concept:

Then examine the effect of soil pH on nutrient availability:

You see that sweet spot around 6.5 pH where nutrients are pretty much most available.

So, we determine the pH of our soil with a good representative probing sent to a trustworthy soil test laboratory of your choice to determine pH and nutrient availability at the levels you farm and your roots grow.

6-8 inch plow layer
2 inch notill layer to check for stratification
12 inches where most of my roots grow
24 inches some are taking now, I haven't done too much of that
