whitehall maryland | I believe the pencil can go either way, if 7 dollar corn costs 5 to plant, then income is 2 dollars a bushel, 150 bushel corn makes 250 an acre. same acre of corn makes 20 ton to the acre corn silage that carries about 3.5 cows if you fed 30 lbs cornsilage every day. 3.5 600 dollar calves per acre. I know this is firemen math but figure 400 dollar a year per cow that equals 200 dollars an acre . rough numbers. I think it depends on situation, for me I had hay equipment and have my row crops custom done. According to my tax lady and banker Im money ahead with cows but everyone is different. I also know that when Im penciling I favor the cows cause I like them, I avoid grain equipment sometimes our pencils favor what we want. I worry and secondguess constantly, and agonize over financial decisions, but at the end of the day you gotta sometimes go with your heart and do what ya love. | |
