I forgot to mention fall calving cows as an option. If you have alot of corn stalks, consider taking in a group of dry spring calving cows to run on your corn stalks and use their bull on your small herd. You'll have no bull expense and most guys won't care if you get use out of their bull because they don't have to feed him. You'll have access to good genetics and don't have to pay for them. As mentioned before, with a small herd, you can't afford much iron.
