Usually give the switch a bit of a trim with a pair of scissors then they go through the chute. Just makes them look a little better kept in my mind, and a bit younger than if they have a great big long tail. Also trim up the cows tails in the winter before calving. That way IF you have to help a calf suck at least you don't have a great big long wet slimy tail trying to hit you in the face.
