They seem to be moving out as a product catagory, or only available from cable/sat provider instead of as a stand-alone purchase.
The current Sears christmas catalog has many models of Blu-ray, a few plain DVD players, a single model of DVD-R/VHS recorder and a combo DVD/VHS (( The format that just won't go away!! )). No hard-drive based PVRs. And 3 pages of LP turntables!! . I guess people have gone to content-source provided or computer based recording solutions. Need to buy an extra DVD-R machine while still available in case mine dies.

There are some DVRs that Sony sold several years ago, whose purchase price included "lifetime" sub to the Electronic Program Guide service. This is now being discontinued, and without the guide it is impossible to manually program it to record, you can't even set the clock on it since it relied on the third-party service for that. Sony DVR are now just useless large bricks for the Electronics Recycling Depot.
