Id say alot of that had to do with weeds. Im sure weed control for oats back in the glory day consisted of starting with a field that didn't have weeds the year before. I did some reseach on fallow ground in the middle ages when I was in college and most of us always believe it was for nutrient release but alot had to do with weed control. let weeds germ and plow them under a couple times in a year and you have a lot less weed seed the next year.
