Subject: RE: How cold to gell diesel

Somerville, Indiana
Oct is a good time to get antigel in your fuel, cost is 2 cents a gallon treated and works like antifreeze=it does wonders before fuel gells, pretty much useless after the fact...Been there many times...Some machines will apply enough heat to the filters to keep them clear down to minus 25 degrees F. here, but a Cummins that flows lot of volumn thru the filter will gel very easy=old Cummins to many on here, those of the 1980s era...Two old machines here an R model Mack, and a 1960 D7 winch tractor have never gelled, most of the time they had antigel already mixed in, a few times not and both have been working at -26 below F...The answer I would give is if you expect 20 degrees F in your area, you need to have a good antigel in your fuel...Before Soybean juice we ran #2 all winter treated for antigel...All fuel filters should be changed at that time, much more fun at a nice warm day than at - 10 and engine quit running in the middle of feedin time.
