Foot switch is the way to go to disable this system. If you do disable it by hand, just hold the wheel and don't allow it to turn so it will disengage itself. Otherwise, you're turning the wrong way against a worm gear and you can potentially damage the unit. Since this feels pretty unnatural to people, the foot switch is the way to do it. To a certain extent at least, all mechanical systems do this type of oscillating back and forth. Even hydraulic systems do this some, but you don't see it. The wheel has to make the correction, but also has to correct back to prevent the tractor from completely steering past the line as it comes back to it.
