Little different thought here than what is being discussed. Barn I feed sheep and cattle in for my Dad was built as a livestock shed and hay barn. The easiest thing I ever fed was when we loaded up 2 bays (12ft wide x 24 deep) in summer with big 4x4 squares stacked two high. Ended up with fence line bunks that we tied to the barn poles. Animals ate what they could reach and I used a pitchfork to throw down off the top bale. But when they couldn't reach anymore we would move the line bunks in a section. It worked slick for us but since you are concerned with the middles, might look at making an adjustment in there so that when you want them to clean the middle, you can set it in 2-3 ft beforfe loading it back up.
