Soil type and application goal plays a big part too. Around here our soil infiltration rates and slope wouldn't allow us to apply an inch with drops without having some run-off. Impacts spread the water pattern out, and allow us to put an inch on per pass and not have any run-off. Plus they're quite a bit cheaper. All depends on your situation and irrigation goals.
