Statesville, NC | One of the best ways I have seeded winter rye is broadcast into standing stalks (I run the header just under the ears, so stalks are fairly tall) then run a 15' batwing rotary cutter and chop the stalks. I have got excellent stands that way. I found the stalks need chopped soon after broadcasting seed. I had one small area I didn't get finished chopping and it rained a little and I went back a couple days later to cut the stalks. I think some of the rye had already sprouted and it doesn't look as good. I'll have to get some pictures this weekend. | |
