Microsoft Security Essentials.  Would be my choice and is what I'm using and putting on customers computers.   McAfee and Norton are a waste of money and resources in my opinion and a lot of magazines now.

I've had problems with AVG, AVAST slows down your computer.  No recent experience with other free anti-virus.

I would also download COMODO free firewall and make certain as I installed it that IT was the only thing I was installing.  I think it offers some other products and services.  Avoid them.

The Comodo firewall blocks stuff from coming in and it blocks stuff from going out if you get infected.  It also asks if you want to install or run a program if the program is unknown to Comodo.  You them temporarily block the program and use Google to see if the program is a problem.
