Since you have cited case ih in your post, I'll use it for an example.

If one were to look back in time at the original rotary from ih, the 14xx series machines, you'll notice a very finctional radiator screen. It was placed there by engineers that knew what they were doing, likely from farming experience or war functionality.

When the 16xx series come out, obviously some new engineers come on board without any practical knowledge. They stuck the air screen right in the dirt and dust. They turned to the marketing dept to have them sell the notion that the line of sight now afforded on the right side of the machine was to be the focus of marketing this stupid mistake of a change. It worked. The marketing dept was good at what they did and sold the buyers on the line of sight notion. Then, when they found the limits of cooling the new high power engines when you have the air intake stuck in the dirt, they invented the new, more efficient design, never seen before, of putting the air screen on the side of the machine, directly in front of the radiator.

When you have a good marketing dept, you can get away with a lot of things. I think the old saying was something like "It's all in how you spin it".

 IMO.
