Bryan, Ohio | Following up on Ed's suggestion- what are your Calcium and Magnesium base saturation percentages? I work with a lot of Hoytville and Nappannee, and if you have Mg over 17 or 18% on those soils (depending on lab- methodologies vary), they can be very tight, especially in no-till as your density increases. No need to work it- this can be handled with proper amounts of high calcium lime and or gypsum. 8 years into no-till, it would be a shame to disturb the infiltration and structure system you have built upon.
Cover crops are a tremendous tool for those soils, and can speed the development of some terrific no-till environments. But an adverse Ca/ Mg relationship in those clay soils can impede water infiltration, and that is a critical ingredient for healthy soils.
