I'm biased toward drainage, as we're on clay, here. I can picture what you're doing and if it were me, here, I'd want eighteen inches of gravel under 8-10" concrete, with a run of tile every 20' under the gravel. In my mind, if the base is solid, and there's good drainage, frost is a non-issue, and the concrete will set sound enough that it doesn't break on it's own.
