Belleville, Ontario | In places there are programs to help with the cost of establishment. Myself along with some clients took part in a plot demo program in Ontario. You want to have the soil worked dwon as nice as Mom's garden. You can hand plant if you like, but getting a plug planter or a rhizome planter is best. Plant early, right about when you should be starting to plant corn. If you could irrigate the first year, it would be a big help, but not usually possible. We have some that is 3 years old and 12 ft high, but still has lots of gaps between plants. Once established it laughs at drought, amazing that way.
At the price of commodity crops, I wouldn't put another acre in. Works great for bedding. No major markets here yet, just a few making pellets for stoves.
