Optional units are the only way I can mke insurance work for me unless I were to split up my farm in several intities. Here's why. I have ground spread out for 30 miles. I could get wiped out in one area and the rest make up the yield difference and not collect a dime.
Another problem is I have both dryland and irrigated yields. My dryland could dry up like this year and my irrigated do well and average the two together and my dryland would not be covered.
Yes, I could save some on premiums but would be out of business with either of these two scenarios.
