These units are a huge leap from my old knife and sealers! Depth, I would say you COULD run them close to 7-8 inches if you wanted to (i dont find that necessary myself) I usually run them in the 4-6 range. They do infact seal better then I expected, mainly because the slot made by the unit is so tiny to begin with, (hence the term minimal soil disturbance). Now with plugging, as long as you run them at the proper depth (no more than 7 inches) the knife on the side that butts up to the blade (pictured below) acts as a wedge to discard residue. Overall I am pleased with the job they do, and for the price you cant beat em..
