NE Iowa
How long is your down spout? I've seen some that are lapped, making a cushion box, half way down the pipe. Is your dead head a cushion box? Or just a connection to the bin? I wouldn't think it would be the leg.
We just put up a leg last year and our cushion boxes were not aligned with the downspout. As the cushion boxes were built at a 45 degree angle and the pipes were close, but more like 48+ degree. Both( we have 2 bins connected to the leg) wore a hole in the cushion box at about 75000 bu. We just finished rebuilding the cushion boxes yesterday so they would line up alot better and hopefully last for several years. I'll post a couple pictures in a few minutes.

As to the FM issue, we don't use a spreader, so we pull some from the core now and again to try and keep it to a minimum.
