ND
That is a great point Old Boy, I joined AgTalk because I am a Trimble and Case IH trained precision farming specialist. I also work at Case IH dealership in North Dakota where we have 3 specialists in parts and 2 techs in the service department. The reason for specialists in the parts department is because about 90% of calls on something not working is from settings and calibrations. If it is a setting we can normally talk them through it and sometimes we just need to go out and change the settings for them, recalibrate the machine, or update software. The techs are helpful when there other issues that are related to the machine not functioning correctly that is causing something in the precision farming area to not work right.

Back to your point of dealers needing to provide help after the sale, more and more dealers are realizing that this is turning out to be a larger area then they ever thought. dealers think of 3 areas for business Service, Parts, and Sales. We are working on the fourth by adding a precision farming area too.

In order for a department to be sustainable there will need to be service charges. For years we have given free service on our precision farming service calls because we thought that we would need to back what we sold.
What do you think would be better
1. yearly service charge where all phone calls and software updates are free but millage charges apply if we need to come out to the farm.
2. flat hourly and millage charges on going out to the farm and flat 15min charges on phone calls.
