Subject: Re: local 'organic' garden....

southern MN
My town has one of those hippy-green folk running a mini golf course. Along with it, they put in an organic garden to provide fresh foods to the town. And to hold education for the classrooms and townfolk.

So, they built their garden on a pile of clay ground next to the river. This was originally a flood plain, but a temp levee was built for flooding one year, and the clay used was deemed toxic from being in contact with the high river water so it was mounded up there for years.

The first year they leveled it and gardened, it rained alot, so they got a local contractor to put in drainage for free several thousands worth.

The 2nd year was a dry spell, and their crops withered - the clay had no organic matter, and dried out. So they talked a local landscaper to donate an expensive irrigation system, and talked a construction firm to donate hauling in 12 inches of good black dirt and spread it over the top of their 2-3 acres. This was $50,000 worth of goods.

Now, they hold classes on their 'organic' 'susatainable' 'ecco-friendly' garden that is so much superior to conventional farming, and much cheaper too!!!!

Yea..... I hope you can see the irony of their garden built on contaminated soil used to fill in a wetland and drained, covered in imported topsoil, and irrigated for free instead of the true $25,000 an acre costs, and then call their operation eccofriendly, organic, and poison-free.....

The sarcasm of the situation writes itself.
