West Central Wisconsin | I had a set of cylinder heads rebuilt from a 1987 350 TBI years ago but never used them. The only truck that we have now is a 1998 with a 350 Vortex engine. Could these early heads be used on this Vortex engine? Thanks, Joe.

NE AR | Plus they wouldnt flow near as well, but on the other hand put a set of vortec heads on an early motor with a intake designed for it and it does great.

Shelbina, MO | It's been so long since I've messed with this stuff, but I was thinking the angle is 2 degrees off from the earlier heads. I think you can bolt up Vortex heads to an earlier block, just have to use a Vortex or aftermarket manifold. I remember after they come out, Edelbrock made a manifold for such a deal, (I think!)

Bethany, MO | We've got an '87 Vortex 350 that has a mid 70's manifold and carburetor on it. We had to modify the bolt holes in the intake.

Ontario Canada | bowtieighth - 8/8/2012 23:28 They did not build the Vortec in 1987. I came out in the 1996 trucks. We've got an '87 Vortex 350 that has a mid 70's manifold and carburetor on it. We had to modify the bolt holes in the intake.

mostly just the bolt holes are different. but the tbi heads with the swirl ports flow much less and will mess up your computer.

Devils Lake, ND | You could redrill your intake to fit on the non-Vortech, but you don't want to. GM make a huge leap with those heads and going back to your 1987 heads is stepping back into the dark ages. I also think the ports wouldn't match up right and it would wreck your flow even more. In 1987 the domestic car companies were still digging out of the pollution regs from the 70's and trying to figure out EFI. Realistically, everything from that era was crap. Use your rebuilt heads for ballast or scrap.

Devils Lake, ND | I used to drive a 95 Chevy. It had the Vortech-style intake and TBI. I was always told there was no such thing. That pickup was kinda gutless. More like the pre-Vortechs.
